History of the Rhodesian Ridgeback

Orginally bred in South Africa, by European settlers, who bred their dogs with the hunting dogs of the Khoikhoi (meaning 'people, people') tribe.  The Khoikhoi's hunting dogs are where the distinct ridge on their back comes from.  The Ridgeback, also know as the African Lion Dog, Van Rooyen's Lion dog or African Lion Hound is known for it's ability to keep lions at bay.
